Subject: Simplified instructions and suggestions for using the JPG Sheriff - Jsheriff.txt Date: 13 May 1998 22:12:44 EDT From: austin Condensed instructions for using the Jsheriff Create a separate folder (directory or subdirectory) for each series that is covered by a CRC (i.e. one for the Hr-nm series, one for oldwork,etc.). For large series you may want to create sub-directories within that series directory since files sometimes become inaccessable when there are more than 200 files in one folder. Create a folder for the Jsheriff and CRCs. To verify JPGs: 1. Double-click Jsheriff.exe to launch it. Drag it toward the top of the screen (drag at the title bar toward the top of the window). Launch Windows Explorer also. 2. In Windows Explorer, highlight one of the files that you want to verify (by left-clicking) and drag it into the white window at the top of the Jsheriff window. The Jsheriff will list the path to the folder that contains the file. 3. At the Jsheriff dropdown menus, click "Open" then select "perform file search". The Jsheriff will scan all of the files that are in the folder that you dragged the file from in step 2. If the file is on a floppy disk, it will scan all of the files on the floppy. 4. Wait until *.JPG* reappears in the window labelled "File pattern". All of the files in the folder will be listed along with their size, CRC, etc. 5. Click the "Open" dropdown menu and select "read CRC list". You'll get a popup window. Select the folder that contains your CRCs, highlight the applicable CRC, then click "open" (or just double-click the CRC file). The Jsheriff will start checking the files. 6. When the Jsheriff is finished checking, the results are listed in the column labelled "error". Dashes in this column mean that it isn't finished checking. No entry for a file means it's good. The other possible entries in the error column are self-explanatory. There's also a summary across the bottom of the Jsheriff window. 7. The Jsheriff will get rid of your bad files if you want it to: Click the "Marking" dropdown menu and select "delete marked bad files" Click "marking" again and select "execute selected action..." This will delete bad files but not unlisted files. Note: The Jsheriff will scan entire series all at once if you have them organized in separate a folder for each series. To do this, follow the instructions above. When you get to step 2, highlight the main folder for that series and drag it to the Jsheriff window. The Jsheriff will scan all of the files in that folder and in each of it's sub-folders. Please let me know if these instructions need clarification. Once you get the hang of using the Jsheriff, go back and read the readme file that comes with it in the CRCPKG.ZIP file. This will give you a better understanding of how the Jsheriff works.
