OK, so there have been quite a few of us lately that have been talking about
taking up the hunt on the spam in the group, and doing some complaining to the
offenders ISPs.

   Some of you may ask, "What, complaining can help?" And the answer is yes, it
can help, and if you sit back and do nothing it will only get worse.

   Below is part of a letter that I mailed to some of the group regulars. It
says all that needs to be said for the most part, and will serve as a decent
post to get this shindig underway.

=================================================================
   Here are a couple of great links that will really help you in spam fighting:

http://www.blighty.com/spam/spade.html
http://www.cs.ruu.nl/wais/html/na-dir/net-abuse-faq/spam-faq.html

Both are great places to get alot of info from. The first one is one of my
favorites since it can help you trace people down if you do not know how to do
it the hard way from a Unix shell machine.

Also, let me say that hunting spam is not new to me, and is something I thought
about bringing up in the group a few times, but for one reason or another, I
just kinda let it go. But, seems now is the time for action.

I have done this in other groups and it has worked out well, What I usually do
is post a follow up with the proper address to complain to. That way folks that
do not know how to trace it, can just send a complaint with headers from the
origianl message to the proper address and move on. Takes just a few seconds for
each complaint. I have a few general text replies that I just cut and paste, so
it can take little time for the actual complaint.

I guess my thoughts for the HR group is not to post a follow up on EVERY spam
that gets posted, but just focus on a handfull a day, and go from there. I hate
to see alot of follow up posts to spam, (it is just more spam in a way). I guess
we could always follow up to the discussion group, but most folks do not even
know of its exsitance so there would be no point in that.

Now, I do not want to get all nutso like the teenfem group, and freak out over
every little off topic post, retromod the group and make everyone use the
abpeh.d group (would be nice though  : ) Just focus on the spam. Most of the off
topic posters will play nice once we ask them to anyway.

=================================================================

And please, send those complaints to spammers, it really does work, and accounts
get closed everyday because of complaints.

Also, if you need any help, want to flame me, or send any money, just post a
note in here to my attention, or via e-mail.

Take care everyone, hope all is well, and let the hunt begin.
